You get the Planning Committee email from Central as you’re exiting the shower.

We’re heading back into the fight. Hopefully the time we’ve spent licking our wounds and repairing the ship will tide us through the rest of this war.

Our priority needs to be getting to the bottom of what the aliens are trying to accomplish with the biological research program we keep encountering. To that end I’ll be drawing up a list of possible targets with an objective of drawing out an ADVENT officer we can skulljack.

The human collaborator scientist did have an implant, and Doctor Tygan tells me that your skulljack extracted useful data. Between that and the information that you downloaded from their research center, hopefully we can get some answers.

The advanced weapons tech and the new alien type you encountered are troubling. The advanced grenade you found is something we might be able to replicate, once the new Medical Center is up and running. The “viper” alien is something else entirely. Hopefully we can learn from it now that our research facilities are fully upgraded.

Research Projects

MC costs in this list are for subsequent copies of an item once it is researched. Initial research just uses X-COM Research Capacity.

Decoding the data you gathered from the Arctic Base will use up 5 RC.

Base production is 3d10+2 (Singh)

  • Magnetic Rifle. We can expand upon our success with the mag pistol and create a full-sized rifle that can project mag rounds with devastating speed and accuracy. One prototype will be produced when this technology is researched. [RC10, MC8]
  • Shard Gun. The Shard Gun takes standard shotgun shells and superheats them in a magnetic ignition chamber. The result is a molten spray of burning death. One prototype will be produced when this technology is researched. [RC10, MC8]
  • Gauss Weapons. With our mastery of ADVENT's core weapon technology, we can now develop specialized weapon systems using the alien technology to improve on power storage and consumption, projectile path fidelity, and penetrative force over greater distances. We may be able to develop a sniper rifle and cannon variant based on our newly learned Magnetic Weapons technology. [RC10]
  • Nanoscale Vest. The Nanoscale vest is a light armor underlay derived from ADVENT armor. This vest can be worn with all X-COM armors to provide additional protection. [RC15]
  • Predator Armor. Predator armor represents our first foray into new body protection based on alien hybrid materials. This suit of medium armor offers excellent protection against most forms of attack. One prototype will be produced when this technology is researched. [RC15, MC10]
  • Spider Suit. This suit of light armor offers improved protection over the basic X-COM Kevlar, and includes a grapple that can be used to access improved tactical positions on the battlefield. One prototype will be produced when this technology is researched. [RC15, MC10]
  • EXO Suit. This suit of heavy armor provides superior protection, and includes an embedded rocket launcher. One prototype will be produced when this technology is researched. [RC15, MC15, 10 points completed]
  • Improved Medikit. Doctor Ranma tells us that we can improve our basic medical kits to provide more effective battlefield triage. All current medikit production will be upgraded once this technology is researched. [RC10]
  • Personal Shield. Our successful autopsy of the ADVENT Shieldbearer has opened up a promising line of inquiry that may allow us to integrate this tech into our own armors. One prototype will be produced when this technology is researched. [RC20, MC10]
  • ADVENT Purifier Autopsy. With a greater understanding of the systems behind the ADVENT Purifier's unusual tolerance of environmental hazards, it will likely be possible to emulate their methods for some use in our own equipment.[RC5]
  • ADVENT Stun Lancer Autopsy. The ADVENT Stun Lancer is commonly seen maintaining order and quelling disturbances throughout the world. Their unique stun lance could be adapted into a weapon our Rangers are already training to use. [RC5, 3/5 points completed]
  • ADVENT MEC Breakdown. These mechanized units have a familiar humanoid form, but we haven't found any indication of a pilot or biological control system. I'm hoping that once we've pulled it apart, I'll be able to mirror some of their advancements in our own weapons and robotic systems. [RC5]
  • Berserker Autopsy. This unusual specimen is clearly afflicted by some form of extreme muscular hyperthrophy, although how the species came to exist in this state will require a thorough examination. I suspect the research could lead to varying enhancements for our own troops, perhaps even means of intensifying their own thirst for combat. [RC10]
  • Viper Autopsy. This creature is clearly reptilian in nature, although it appears to be not only sentient, but also highly intelligent. Still, the underlying physiology is remarkably similar to a number of terrestrial species- including the venom sacks, which we might be able to synthesize and incorporate for use in our medical supplies. [RC10]
  • Elerium. The aliens, and to a lesser extent ADVENT, have long relied on the otherworldly element known as Elerium to power everything from their weapons systems to the UFOs themselves. It may take some time but furthering our understanding of this material could greatly advance our own weapon and armor development projects.[RC15]
  • Psionics. Although we've seen them wielding Psionic powers before, our recent encounters with the aliens have truly shown us how they are able to deftly manipulate the flow of Psionic energy and use it to their advantage. If we were to master it as well as they have, the potential applications in the field would be limitless.[RC20]

Manufacturing Projects

Base production is 3d10+1 (Mendoza) +1 (Tieffendahl) +1 (Johnson)

  • Mag Pistol. The workshop can now manufacture additional copies of the magnetic pistol. [MC5]
  • Magnetic Ammunition. This ammunition can be used in all of our magnetic weaponry. [MC1/2 (one unit of capacity produces two boxes)].
  • Skulljack. If needed, we can manufacture additional copies of the Skulljack for use during away missions. Doctor Tygan also thinks that we may be able to improve the basic design at some point.[MC10]
  • Additional Medikit Production. We all know that medical supplies are at a premium. We can dedicate a portion of our manufacturing output to augment what Doctor Ranma can put together in Medical each week, but that means a cut in other areas. [Manufacturing Cost: 2/kit]
  • Advanced Surgical Kit. Our medikits are pretty fantastic, but even they can only do so much. This kit, designed for field use, can keep a critically injured team member alive long enough for more substantial medical intervention back on the Avenger. [Game Note: this is a one-use Raise Dead device.] [MC5/kit]
  • Advanced Medical Center. The upgrade to the Avenger’s power system will allow us to further upgrade our facilities. The project outline includes debris clearance on the lower decks. [MC20, requires Improved Medical Capacity, adds unlocks, +1d6 medikit production.]
  • Defensive Turrets. Our raid on the alien supply ship highlights our own vulnerability to attack. This upgrade would add a pair of automatic turrets to the exterior of the ship, flanking the exit ramp. [MC15]
  • Mundane Toolkits. Chief Shen can produce just about any kind of ordinary toolkit in the workshop. Just let her know what you need and we'll see that it's added to the queue. [MC varies depending on the tool.]

It was good to get back into the field. It was decidedly NOT good to almost get killed by a decontamination chamber. Daud would have to be more observant in the future. But also, having a sealed suit might help.

But, they found another alien. And boy, was it alien. Snake men. Now this one was a shocker at the time. Almost as much as that Berserker had been. Turning a corner and seeing them was a lot. But now that he had the opportunity to look at them closer, Daud found them so physically similar to earth's own snakes, at least on the surface, that he had to wonder at how they came to be.

Other than that, he'd finally field tested the skulljack on an enemy combatant. And he was a combatant, despite being a scientist. But he was also human. A collaborator, but a human. It still made Daud sick inside that he had to use it on the man.

Less sick than what happened to the woman that tried to surrender. The helmet she wore killed her before she could. Daud actually tried to help her, but... there was nothing he could do. She died horribly. And either the mask itself, or someone somehow knew the woman was surrendering and triggered the mask to... poison her somehow.

Add one more thing to the pile of atrocities ADVENT would answer for if... no, when, they were finally taken down.

"It's getting worse," Bo commented during the conversation at dinner. They'd all been busy, the extra facilities seemed to create as much that needed processing rather than reduce the amount of work. She looked back wistfully on a time when all she needed to ponder was what takeaway to get for dinner after a late day in theatre.

"Contemplating how they control the humans we find and work out what they've done to them was bad enough, but snakes? Why'd it have to be snakes?" She shivered a little. "Why couldn't it have been bunny rabbits or fluffy cats?" She paused a moment fork in the air as if evaluating something she'd just said.

"Scratch that, not cats," she added after a few moments and then began to fork up food again. "Those murderous little bastards would probably have wiped us out by now."

((Bo is going to keep going on the autopsy for now with a treat injury of 15. If she's lucky enough to exceed what's left for that then drop the rest into Viper autopsy if they can't join the regular pot.

Manufacturing is the Advanced Medical Centre then onto Defensive turrets if there's enough, though someone mentioned needing a set of tools as a priority?

Research, apart from what Bo is personally doing, is finishing the Exo Suit then onto the Nanoscale vest.))

"Hell, can you imagine what they'd do to rabbits?" Jesse said, her mouth half-stuffed with most of a ration pack. "Give 'em huge claws and psychic powers and shit. Make them the size of a car. Enhance their sensitive ears to the point where it'd be impossible to hide from 'em. Imagine how fast those fuckers could get. And how fast they'd breed."

She washed down her dry-ass rations with some water from her canteen. Looked around the table. Shrugged.

"Look, all I'm saying is that if you can't imagine how all this alien biotech could turn the most harmless thing into something absolutely fucking terrifying, then you're probably just not trying hard enough."

Distress Signal?

The team went into the frozen land to locate the source of a very dim distress signal. The beam was coming from a snowy cave. There was patches of green "goo" here and there. Someone mentioned blood. Green blood? At the back of the cave system a wooden hut was found and next to it two human bodies and the transmitter. John grabbed the lighter body. The other was left in place. He had to drop it as some kind of Giant Alien Standing Snakes (GASS?!) came out of nowhere and attacked them. A few rounds of ammo later the place was "cleaned up". A snake body and the frozen body were taken to the shuttle. Instead of going home, the group tried and succeeding in locating a hidden ADVENT base nearby. The place was searched. After some tough fights one scientist tried to surrender but there must have been some kind of safety device preventing that...

MANUFACTURING: "I think we really need these fancy Ammo. Sorry about the last batch. Let me try again." (CRAFT MECH 8)

RESEARCH" "Guys, anyone working on that ELERIUM thing? Or you guys want to complete that EXO project first?"

(( Research wise, first choice is Exo Suit, followed by Viper Autopsy. Manufacturing choice is Advanced Medical Center. Henderson will contribute to Viper Autopsy with Concentration, assuming I don't need to redo heavy armor prof training due to missing last week cause of unexpected issues. ))

Henderson started as he nibbled on his lackluster rations. They certainly lacked that certain something that Munch^TM had brought to the table, but he certainly wasn't going to outwardly complain about it. Certainly not when there were more pressing things to complain about, that's for sure.

"So giant snakes though huh? Who'd have thought cold blooded things could survive in that cold? I mean I understand that they're genetically modified super alien lifeforms that could probably even survive in space, but still, you'd think it would be too cold for reptiles there. Really though, if you want to think scary alien choices, we've gotta go with birds. You ever see that Alfred Hitchcock - Nah, you probably haven't. To make it simple, that movie made even normal birds seem freaky and terrifying. Now just imagine alien super birds. Now that's a scary monster movie idea... Huh, that might be a fun thing to do one of these breaks, make our own home movies. Bet Sarah would love that too."

Nothing says XCOM like resisting alien occupation and working on my tan at the same time - I'd just like it to be from the sun and not random explosions. And hey, at the beach we can all get drinks, chill out and maybe settle this whole 'Alien war' thing with a game of volleyball. Anyone for starting a volleyball team? We've got to be ready for anything, and who wants to look like a slob when the aliens throw down the sports gauntlet?"

"Aaand Brittany from the Power Plant room says, "I miss nature. I want to visit some forests." Oooh ho, maybe not, Brittany... have you seen those giant snakes we brought in? Those aliens are making all kinds of things out of animals these days. Knowing our luck, we could settle down, start having a picnic, and before you know it, we're covered in giant alien ants. Here's an idea - can Vic use his morale-boosting tannoy radio show to improve people's performance? Not sure what skill that would be, but I think his Persuade is at 10 or so.

If not, happy to make more mag pistol ammo with Craft Mech +4.

The group went out to check on a faint distress beacon. They found a cave with bits of green goo splattered in spots which looked to Stanley like blood. However, they didn't run into anything as they progressed into the cave complex and finally found the source of the signal, a couple of crude huts and a pair of frozen humans. On their way out, they ran into a new alien species, big semi-intelligent snakes which were dispatched after a bit of a melee and a few team members getting a bit banged up in the process.

On the way home, they detected a alien base and detoured to investigate. They swept thru the base wiping out most of the defenders. One scientist tried to surrender, but got remotely self-destructed somehow. Stanley recovered some data from the computers related to the genetic engineering that seemed to be going on there. He was happy to be out of the cold on back safely to base after that.

//Stanley will add his repair 17 to whatever base upgrade/repair project is deemed the priority; he doesn't have any preference himself ATM.

The rule is that you have to be present to participate in the strategic game that week. :( But on the plus side, you'll be ready when the first suit rolls off the assembly line (assuming you don't have to fight Vic for it). Hmm, maybe I should add an arena to the lower deck of the Avenger...

There is a sense of anticipation on the ship as the Avenger’s engines fire and the ship turns once more toward warmer latitudes. The members of Alpha each feel that whatever happens, it is unlikely that you will get another long interlude, a “vacation,” before this war is decided one way or the other.

Ah, my own medical bay! I can’t believe how quickly it is coming together. Sorry I kept intruding on the work this week, but I have big plans, and I want everything to be placed exactly correctly so we can hit the ground running.

I’m sure that all that other stuff you are working on is quite important as well.

Yep, it's the cannon on the Stunlancer. The moment I clicked on the Stunlancer, it crashed. Same for all three crashes.

Worked fine on the regular ADVENT guys. Unless it just is whenever the Cannon actually hits...

That last time, I attacked the Stunlancer with the Cannon, and missed.

Then I attacked one of the stationary targets when no-one was doing anything else, and presumably hit, and it crashed.

Wondering if something's up with the Cannon's damage script or the ammo or something. And we just never hit with it before?

Okay, not sure what it was, but it wasn't the armor. Crashed right after the lancer died, and I was trying to move to another area.

EDIT: Okay, we have a likely suspect. Bad cannon!

EDIT 2: since we're at game time, let's call the session there. I'll change the cannons (or just remove them, since your pistols are better at this point) and we can just go from there. We can pick up the mission next time. That does mean we won't need skill rolls for this week, but you can do other IC posts for the usual XP bonus.
